At the end of the month bombers stationed in Guam and The Mariana Islands attacked Iwo Jima.Durning Febuary " the first of 30,000 US Marines landed on Iwo Jima, Japan after heavy naval bombardment.” (Iwo Jima,Chen) Within eight days of the Americans’s arrival the ionic flag raising had taken place and the final charge of the Japanese had already been completed, and less then two weeks later US air strips had already been set up.
Affect on the Rest of the War:
The decision to invade Iwo Jima to use it as a strategic stepping stone island to set up future attacks to mainland Japan or other Pacific Islands was key to the success to the entire Pacific operation. Iwo Jima turned out to be a vital part of winning the war. Japan had radar on Iwo Jima, which may have prevented the United States from advancing towards Japan by alerting islands of oncoming attacks, like Okinawa. Which would enable the US to take Islands closer to mainland Japan.

With out this achievement the US would not have been able to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, Iwo Jima was used in the Manhattan Project as a refueling station, and was important to the projects sucess. The small eight square mile island of Iwo Jima served as a retreat for damaged planes, or bombers, that would have otherwise crashed. Also the United States set up radar on the island, which alerted them of Japanese areal attacks coming towards the US or US occupied land.
Affects of Postwar:SinceIwo Jima helped drop the Atomic Bomb, then it also helped fueled the tension between the Soviets and the US.
